Flow Basketball Academy is honored to announce a partnership with Jewell Loyd, starting guard of the Seattle Storm and former standout at Notre Dame University and Niles West High School. Jewell has selected to partner with a small number of youth programs across the country which she believes are teaching basketball “the right way”.
Jewell explains, “I care deeply for the game and want it to thrive. I see too many youth programs focus on enforcing rote plays which results in robotic actions. Teaching sound fundamentals leads to creative, highly capable players who make the game fun and ever-changing. I selected to work with Flow because they value these principles as do I.”
Jewell grew up in Lincolnwood Illinois, just northwest of Chicago. She plays for the Seattle Storm after they selected her as the #1 draft pick in 2015. Loyd still credits Lincolnwood and Chicagoland as being the place where she fell in love with basketball. As a kid, she would play basketball in the neighborhood with her older brother, tossing ally-oops and perfecting a fade away jumper. At Niles West High School, she had a very accomplished career as a 4-time All-State player and McDonald’s honored, while playing AAU basketball for Midwest Elite. All of that hard work paid off, and Loyd went to Notre Dame, earning Player of the Year and 1st team All-American, before leaving for the WNBA after her 3rd year.
Throughout her life, Jewell has championed the payoff of hard work and fortitude. Despite all the different levels of basketball in which she has competed, Loyd has looked to make herself the best basketball player she could be. She pushed herself to work both harder and smarter, improving substantially from her first to second season at the Storm. That improvement highlights her dedication and “hunger” as her Seattle Storm coach said.
Loyd continues to contact other NBA and WNBA players for advice to figure out new ways to improve even at the highest level of basketball. She is anxious to give back to younger players and share the lessons she has gained. Jewell will actively be sponsoring the Flow AAU 14/15U Team, plus sharing tips and suggested work outs which will be posted on the Flow website under Resources/Jewell.
